Accessibility
This site aims to meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA. Here is how to adjust it, what we know falls short, and how to tell us about a barrier.
Draft — owner to confirmLast updated: [Owner to confirm the date]
Our target
The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, on every page, in both lighting modes. Pages are checked with automated accessibility tests in both modes, and keyboard use is tested on the main pages.
Light and motion
Lamp off (North light). The Lamp switch in the header, the menu and the footer turns the studio light off. North light is a light theme with even light, and the best view for judging colour.
Motion: Calm. Calm keeps light, colour and type and removes movement: no page transitions, no drying titles, no moving light, and instant page turns in the sketchbook. Until you choose, the site follows your device’s reduced-motion setting.
Try them here
On: the studio at night. Off: North light, best for judging colour. Both choices are remembered on this device.
Keyboard and pointer
- Everything works with a keyboard. Skip to content is the first link on every page, and the focus ring is always visible.
- Every drag or 3D view has buttons too. The sketchbook has Previous page, Next page and a Go to No. field; Look closely has zoom buttons and a pan pad; the print preview has Turn left, Turn right and Face front.
- Arrow keys turn the sketchbook’s pages and pan Look closely only while those views have focus, so they never take over the page.
- Controls are at least 24 by 24 pixels, and the main buttons 44.
Seeing and reading
- Text has at least 4.5:1 contrast in both lighting modes. Your device’s increased-contrast and forced-colours settings (such as Windows contrast themes) are honoured.
- Text follows your browser’s size, and pages reflow to one column on narrow screens.
- Every painting and doodle has a text alternative, and a longer description under “Describe this painting” or “Describe this doodle”.
- Images made in the AI Studio are labelled AI-generated wherever they appear.
Known limits
- Descriptions are machine-written. The longer descriptions of paintings and doodles were written by software from the photographs, and can miss or misread things.
- Lamp views are simulations. The light moving over some paintings is built from photographs. Prints are flat.
- AI Studio images are described only by the idea or the title their maker gave.
- Payment happens on Stripe’s page, which Stripe maintains.
Report a barrier
